How To Use Campaign Automation To Boost Your ROI

How To Use Campaign Automation To Boost Your ROI

The struggle of manual optimization

As most media buyers and affiliate marketers already know manual optimization can be a real drag sometimes. When you have 25+ campaigns and are too busy thinking up new angles for your landers and creatives, it’s a pain to go throw all your campaigns to optimize sources, bids, and creative performance.

That is exactly why we started to add more automatic features to our ad platform.  In this article, we will cover auto-optimization by creativity, automatic campaign rules, and how to successfully use them to effortlessly boost your campaign ROI.

If you don’t have a firm grasp of optimization, we recommend to first check out our Step-by-step guide to campaign optimization.

Auto-optimization by creativity

auto-optimization by creativity

Our auto-optimization by creativity feature allows you to automatically direct more traffic to your best-converting creatives

By simply checking the box above on the campaign creation page,  your campaign will automatically find and show more your best performing ad creativities.

For Example: Let say you have 3 creatives and one of them is converting more than the other 2.  By enabling the traffic distribution A.I. feature, the platform would automatically start sending more traffic to that better-converting creatives after proving that it is the better performing creative.

After a couple of days, you can come back to the platform and easily see which is the better performing creative then continue to optimize your creatives by replacing the underperformers with variants of the more successful ones. (Remember the point of A/B tests aren’t just to find the winner and then stop but to continue to test new things and continue to improve your ROI.)

You can also do this while safely knowing that all your campaigns are not burning any extra money on the underperforming creatives.

It’s also good to keep in mind that our algorithm never completely stops spending sending traffic to the underperforming creativities (it will never drop below 5% of the total traffic). We do this to ensure that your top-performing creatives continue to be the best.

*For our traffic distribution A.I. to work, you must be sending the conversions in the postback.

Automatic rules

What are Automatic Rules and how to use them to make life easier?

automatic optimization rules

Rule-based optimization allows you to make dynamic campaigns that adjust and optimize according to the rules you set. This allows you to spend less time optimizing while still ensuring the same performance and profits.

You can create and edit your custom rules from the Create Page. The rules are broken down into flexible IF-THEN statements. For some rules to get you started, check out the templates down below.

For example:

IF a supply has more than $10 spent &  the CTR is lower than %1  Within 24h  THEN  pause supply Every 4h.

Our algorithm will then look, every four hours,  at all the sources matching both of the if conditions (supply has more than $10 spent and a CTR lower than 10%) within the last 24 hours,  then it would go and pause all of the feed matchings that criteria.

How to create new rules?

how to make automatic rules

You can apply automatics rules to the various dimensions (1) including campaign, supply id, site id, and user freshness.

You can then make conditions based on different measures (2,3,4,5). You can make as many conditions as you want but you must start with 2 (trust us you don’t want less than 2).

The time frame (7) is how far back our computers will look when making the calculations.

The action taken (8) determines what will happen when the conditions are met.  You are able to increase the budget, raise or lower the bid, and pause the stated dimension (1).

Lastly, you have control over the frequency (9) or how often the rule is checked.

You can always check the rules stats (10) to see how many times the rule has been used as well as save the rule as a template (11) to use on other campaigns.

As with auto-optimization by creativity, you should be sending conversions via postback for this feature to work properly.

Another important note is that CPA is only calculated after a conversion has been completed so if you use CPA to pause underperforming supplies, the supplies with no conversions won’t be changed.

Automatic rules best practices

Automatic Optimization is a powerful tool that can save you countless hours of optimization but if you aren’t writing your rules correctly they can actually do more harm than good.

  • It is important to keep in mind that the first condition should always be spent because this ensures that there have been enough clicks to properly optimize.
  • We also recommend that when testing a new rule that you check to see how much traffic has been cut off because it is easy to accidentally cut off too much.
  • Use spent, conversions, and ROI to automatically pause poor-performing offers.
  • Use spent, conversions, and ROI to automatically blacklist poor-performing supplies and user age groups.
  • Use spent, conversions, and ROI to automatically blacklist poor-performing supplies.
  • Use win rate combined with spent or ROI to increase the bid on high-performing supplies.
  • Use spent, conversions, and ROI to decrease the bid on poor-performing supplies.
  • It is very easy to accidentally pause all your feeds so if it is your first time, we recommend starting with a duplicate test campaign.
  • Because CPA is only calculated after a conversion is made, it’s best not to use it to try and blacklist poor-performing feeds otherwise the supplies with no conversions won’t be affected (the CPA would be null).
  • Some campaigns have performance that peaks at certain times then a drop in performance that can cause the campaign to become unprofitable. You can use automatic rules to stop these campaigns at the right time then resume it the next day to create a cycle.
